Magazine Christmas Tree

If you are looking for a way to put some old magazines to use, this is a great way to recycle and reuse. I have a million magazines sitting around the house and why not put them to some good use by decorating some space in your home! I did a couple of trees for my dining room table and not only are they unique, but they are adorable!

Simply pick a magazine you no longer find useful. Bend the magazine to break the spine.

Fold the top right page into the seam of the magazine, then one more time. Repeat for all individual pages.

Fold the bottom triangle of each folded page up so that the magazine is now flat at the bottom.

Spray paint your tree any desired color and immediately sprinkle glitter while the paint is still wet. For a more unique tree, leave natural so pages of your magazine are exposed. Apply adhesive glue and immediately sprinkle with glitter.

Ribbon is optional, but adds a little something extra!

There you have it: handmade with love.

I can't wait for our upcoming craft night, take one guess what the girls and I are going to do! I think that this was a good trial run, but next time I may use some color. Hmmm.....white or gold, what do you think? Let me know if you give this one a try, I would love to see the results of your magazine Christmas tree!

xoxo

I did a couple of these but decided I wanted a layered look. I did all the folding but when I got to the center lft it clear. then mounted one tree on top of another. Instead of making it stand on its own left the back flat and mounted to craft board cut to the same size & shape added a hanger and put on my sliding glass door. Glued on small balls and stars. draped curly ribbon from the star on top to the bottom. No camera so cannot post a picture yet. have to wait for santa to do that! just hold one tree above another & let your mind go! you could do 2 or 3 layers and add a brown painted toilet paper tube for the trunk.

Interesting idea, but you've taken an item that IS recyclable, and changed it into something that IS NOT recyclable anymore. So your "green" craft project is just the opposite. All these things will now end up in the landfill. That's not being green.

But how many people really recycle magazines. most get thrown in the trash.

Thank you for reminding me of these lovely trees. I made them back in the 1980s when we were all "going green". Today when I saw your post, I thought how pretty they would be sprayed red and used to make a centerpiece for Valentine's Day. My mind is racing with ideas how arrange and accent them. Think I'll dig out some different size mags and go for it. I'm so glad the youth of today is carrying on the old traditions!

  9. Wow, these brought back childhood memories. I remember making these trees with Readers Digest. I had not thought of these in ages. Thanks for bringing back the idea.

    1. We made them with Reader's Digest, too. It was in the 60's, when I was just a little girl.

Thank you for the stroll down memory lane. My Dad & I use to make these from the T.V. Guide. Another thing we did with them was put two of them back to back, thus making a very fat Christmas tree. I work with developmentally challenged adults, and guess what we will be making tomorrow at our Day Program:))

As an activity director in an assisted living facility, we have made these trees for the past two years out of old Avon books. We fold them, I spray them gold, silver, green, or blue and then the ladies decorate with tiny bows, small beads, and ribbon garland. They are striking and usually sell out before they end up in our little gift shop.

  15. Love them - our local recycling facilities don't take shiny coated paper for recycling so it would be good to use them for something.
